The Rocky Mountain Goat Alliance

When he’s not working as the marketing director for Schnee’s Shoes, Boots & Hunting Gear in Bozeman, Montana, Peter Muennich can usually be found on a mountain or a river somewhere in Montana following his passion for the outdoors. Two years ago Pete drew a coveted Montana goat tag and after hunting all season, notched his goat tag at the last minute on November 28th, two days before the season ended! That’s doing it the hard way Pete !  You can read Pete’s full story of his goat hunt on Schnee’s blog at : http://blog.schnees.com/author/peter/page/2/

Pete has started an organization called the Rocky Mountain Goat Alliance to assist in the management of Mountain goats, both population and range. Their website is www.goatalliance.com.  I picked up one of their T-shirts last week and I think they hit a homerun with the design. Check it out !!

I am already a member having found the alliance in web search results. They have some great information. The mountain goat is unique in both habitat and social structure. There is not much out there to study with the best book being A Beast The Color Of Winter. It is a great read, a deeply personal mountain living experience packed with observation and insight.

If one looks back at the genesis of the RMEF, it had similar humble beginnings. I doubt the RMGA will ever reach the same level of popularity or funding simply becuase goat hunting opportunities are so few, and will not ever be plentiful, but I’m a supporter and looking forward to contributing time and money to enahnce the survival and appreciation of this great North American beast.

Thanks for the comment !! I keep up with some of the things the RMGA is doing through Pete Muennich. The field work has shown there are a lot more goats here in SW Montana than FWP thought and that has opened more hunting opportunities. Pete is always looking for volunteers to help. Thanks again for posting !
